Methodologies (visit)

Project management methodologies control the whole shape of a project. Methodologies lay out the general approach to planning, reporting and decision making for any particular project. When undertaking a project one of the first things you will have to do is decide on a methodology.


Traditional

Traditional methods are those which are based on ideas that have been around for a long time. Traditional methodologies include Prince 2, Cristal Methods and Waterfall.

Software Development

In the last 30 years software development has given rise to a number of methodologies specific to software projects. Agile Software Development, Feature driven, Extreme Programming and Rapid Application Development.

Agile

Traditional methodologies emphasize the creation of a total plan from the word go. Agile development acknowledges that in some situations this is not possible and seeks to cope with this uncertainty. Rational Unified Process, Scrum, Adaptive Project Framework.

Other Methodologies

Some methodologies do not fall nicely into any of the other groupings. These include: Lean Development and , Information Technology Infrastructure.

Concepts (visit)

This part of the site goes through project management ideas which are very powerful but do not amount to complete project methodologies. Whilst these principles are more lightweight then full methodologies their very simplicity can make them very powerful tools in their own right.

In actual fact it is quite possible to create your own methodology using a handful of these ideas rather than following an 'off the peg' solution.


Thinking it Through

Almost all project management concepts encourage people to think the project through. Some concepts, however, have this as their main purpose. E.g. Requirement Analysis, SWOT Analysis, PEST Analysis, Pareto Analysis.

Organization

Big projects can determine the fate of the organization which executes them. There are a group of concepts which allow organizations to manage this relationship. E.g. Steering Committee, Portfolio Management, Programme Management, Project Support Office etc...

Day to Day

The bread and butter of projects is the cycle: the same process repeated regularly gradually chewing its way through the project. Here are some short cycles. Change Control, Stakeholder Management, Issues Management, Staff Review.

Monitoring

You get what you inspect. When you are committing a lot of recourses you have to be very sure that things are going the way you want them. Here are some concepts designed to help monitoring Deliverables, Earned Value, Milestones, Budgets, Stage Gates, Acceptance Testing etc.
